    Default How to rebuild a velvet drive 10-17-004 1:1

    HERE IS A FEW PHOTOS I TOOK WHILE REBUILDING MY VELVET DRIVE MARINE TRANSMISSION ..

    ROOT OF CAUSE FOR REBUILD WAS THAT I RAN IN REVERSE INTO SAND BANK DURING LAKE TRIALS AFTER I BROUGHT THE SUNSPORT HOME , FORWARD WAS
    STILL IN GOOD WORKING ORDER SO I JUST WENT ABOUT MY WAY ... THIS IS WHAT I FOUND AND HOW I WENT ABOUT TO REBUILD MY TRANSMISSION , :NOTE:
    I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL AND THIS WAS MY FIRST TRANS REBUILD OF ANYKIND ! EXCEPT REGULAR TRANFER CASE AND REAR ENDS ...

    FIRST DRAIN THE 2 QTS AND REMOVE THE STRINGER MOUNTS ....

    NEXT MARK THE FRONT PUMP HOUSING I USED A PUNCH TO MAKE TO CORRESPONDING DOTS TO LINE BACK UP WHEN I RE-ASSEMBLE .. VERY IMPORTANT YOU DO THIS , THE PUMP CAN BE MOUNTED FOR LEFT ROTATION AND RIGHT ROTATION SO ITS IS CRUCIAL YOU MARK IT

    REMOVE PUMP HOUSING WITH SMALL PICK OR (TWEAKY FLATHEAD) , CLEAN SHAFT FROM SEAL PITTING AND DEBRIS FOR PUMP GEAR TO BE REMOVED ....



    REMOVE CAP BOLTS USING A 12POINT 3/8 SOCKET

    TAP LIGHTLY TO SPLIT PUMP CASE FROM TRANS HOUSING, USE GRAVITY TO HELP POP IT LOOSE WITH OUT SCARING CASING

    SET CASE TO THE SIDE ....


    AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS

    PULL THE CLUTCH DISC AND STEEL PLATES AND SET THEM ON A STAGING AREA IN THE SAME ORDER AS THEY WERE REMOVED

    ONCE YOU REMOVE THE PLATES YOU CAN PULL THE FORWARD SPLINE GEAR AND CLUTCH PACK... THERE WILL BE 2 SNAP RINGS THAT NEED TO BE REMOVED TO PRESS SHAFT OUT AND SEPARATE THE CLUTCH PUMP ASSEMBLY


    SHAFT IS PRESSED THROUGH THE REAR AND THE BEARING WILL PULL OUT WITH YOUR FINGER

    BE SURE TO STAGE PARTS IN THE ORDER THEY ARE REMOVED AND LABEL IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN

    PULL THE PRESSURE PLATE ASSEMBLY AND SET ASIDE

    REMOVE SNAPP RING FROM CLUTCH PACK

    SET CLUTCH PLATE IN ORDER AS THEY ARE REMOVED

    NOW GET TO A PARTS WASHER OR MAKE A TUB WASHER TO CLEAN ALL PARTS AND LAY NEW CLUTCH DISC IN A NEW TRANSMISSION DEX III OIL BATH TO
    PRESOAK AND LUBE DISC AND PLATES FOR RE-INSTALLATION , AIR DRY ALL SOLVENT FROM PARTS AND START WITH A CLEAN AREA TO INSTALL FRESHLY
    SOAKED DISC INTO SPLINE CASE (FORGOT TO SNAP A PIC OF THE NEW DISC GOING IN ) ALSO THERE ARE 2 SEALING RINGS THAT COME IN THE KIT THAT WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM SHAFT AND REPLACED WITH NEW .

    ***CHECK THE GAP FROM THE (SNAP RING TO THE STEEL PLATE) AND MAKE SURE THE TOLERANCE IN IN SPEC OF 0.0018'' - 0.0053'' ***




    SPIN THE CASE TO SET THE TEETH INTO THE DISC AND BECOME A FLUSH ASSEMBLY
